Portrait Urn is based
in Maquoketa, Iowa, a small town near the Mississippi River where artists
are relocating through the support of Maquoketa
Art Experience, a non-profit that provides
studio spaces on Main St. to skilled artists.
Maquoketa artists Charles Morris and Thomas Metcalf were commissioned to
create works of art for
Trappist Caskets in Dubuque, Iowa, and both were inspired by Trappist
Casket's tradition of
providing finely handcrafted wood caskets and urns. Morris, who has
worked as a portrait artist
for 30 years, envisioned a way to incorporate portraiture within handcrafted memorial urns.
Gifted portrait artists in New York and Philadelphia
expressed immediate interest in
creating Portrait Urns with us. Through their participation along
with Morris and Metcalf,
Portrait Urn
is able to offer several highly refined styles of portraiture.
